A graduate of the Wits School of Architecture & Planning with a background in corporate architecture, Karen Eicker has written for South Africa’s foremost built environment and infrastructure publications, winning her the SAPOA Property Feature Journalist of the Year award in 2010.
Passionate about architecture, sustainable city development and communications, Karen is a founder and Director of the Architects’ Collective (est. 2007), which curates exhibitions, cultural activities and publications aimed at furthering the profession of architecture in Africa.
In 2012, Karen took on the post of Commissary General of the 25th International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress, which was held in Durban in August 2014. For her leadership and work on this project, Karen was awarded a President’s Certificate of Meritorious Service from the South African Institute of Architects.
Karen is a Director of the Architect Africa News Network (est. 2000), and a member of the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA). In 2015 she founded Apex Information Systems (Pty) Ltd, which works in the built environment, property and design professions to connect people through communications, online education and the media.
